What is this course about?

Students will study our changing awareness of crime, criminological theories, criminal investigations from crime scenes through to courtrooms as well as crime and punishment. Students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and a critical understanding of both our legal system and crime.

What content is on the course?

The Level 3 Criminology (WJEC) content is taught in 4 units in preparation for the examinations and coursework:

  • Unit 1 – Changing awareness of crime
  • Unit 2 – Criminological theories
  • Unit 3 – Crime scene to courtroom
  • Unit 4 – Crime and Punishment

Course Assessment

  • Unit 1 and Unit 3 are assessed using a controlled assessment. Both make up 50% of their overall grade.
  • Unit 2 and Unit 4 are assessed using an external exam. Both make up 50% of their overall grade.

Where could this course lead?

The qualification allows learners to gain the required understanding and skills to be able to consider employment within some aspects of the criminal justice system, e.g. the police, the National Prison and Probation Service, the Courts and Tribunals Service or the National Offender Management Service.
