Leigh Academy Longfield played host to a delegation of 16 education ministers and professionals from Japan today, accompanied by representatives from Google Japan. The visit was a remarkable opportunity to showcase our innovative and forward thinking digital strategy, and the ways we successfully embed technology to transform teaching and learning across the curriculum. The visitors were keen to see first-hand how our approach supports student engagement and academic success in the modern world.
Fostering International Mindedness and Cultural Exchange
Beyond showcasing technology, the visit created a fantastic platform for cultural exchange and actively developed international mindedness among our students. Our staff and students embraced the opportunity to share and learn, demonstrating the powerful links between global awareness and a dynamic curriculum.
Across the academy this week, some students engaged in a variety of activities that brought Japanese culture to Longfield:
- English: Students explored Japanese poetic forms by writing Haiku in English and immersed themselves in storytelling by reading and analysing traditional Japanese stories written in English.
- Food Preparation: A selection of year 7s students enjoyed a practical session on baking matcha biscuits.
- Drama: A group of students explored movement and performance techniques inspired by the highly stylised traditions of Kabuki theatre.
- Art: Lower school lessons included elements of intricate designs and vibrant aesthetics of Japanese patterns.
The enthusiasm and respect demonstrated by our students were exceptional, creating a deeply positive and enriching environment for the entire community including our international visitors.
Positive Impact on Our Students
This level of international collaboration has an overwhelmingly positive impact on the work the academy does and, crucially, on the opportunities available to our students. More importantly, giving our students exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and global professionals is vital to preparing them to be future-ready, well-rounded, and internationally minded members of society.
We extend our sincere thanks to the educators from Japan and Google Japan for a truly inspiring day of collaboration and cultural exchange!
