Academy Entry Requirements: 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics. Level 2 BTEC subjects count at a grade Merit or above.

Subject-Specific Requirements:

  • If studying separate Sciences at GCSE; Grade 7 in GCSE Chemistry AND Grade 6 in GCSE Physics OR Biology
  • If studying combined Sciences at GCSE; Grade 77 in GCSE Combined Science
  • Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics

What is this course about?

The A Level Chemistry A qualification is a content-led course designed to develop theoretical and practical chemistry skills, knowledge and understanding. Students will cover a variety of units in physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry.

What content is on the course?

The A Level Chemistry (OCR A) content is taught in 6 modules:

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in chemistry
  • Module 2 – Foundations in chemistry
  • Module 3 – Periodic table and energy
  • Module 4 – Core organic chemistry
  • Module 5 – Physical chemistry and transition elements
  • Module 6 – Organic chemistry and analysis

All students will complete Modules 1-6, along with the Practical Activity Groups (PAGs).

Course Assessment

The course content is assessed through three examinations:

  • Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry
  • Synthesis and analytical techniques
  • Unified chemistry
  • Students will also complete the practical endorsement through demonstrating a range of skills during the course practicals.

The course could lead into a degree in chemistry or a related subject and/or careers in medicine, environmental science, engineering, toxicology, developing consumer products, metallurgy, space exploration, developing pharmaceuticals, perfumes and cosmetics.
